What causes premature ejaculation?

In the past, premature ejaculation (PE) was thought to be purely psychological. Now doctors understand that PE can have a biological explanation and is associated with serotonin signals in the brain (it’s like a brain messenger chemical) that control ejaculation.

Research has been conducted to develop drug treatments that influence the serotonin signalling pathway.

How many men suffer from PE?

A study was conducted in Australia, New Zealand, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand, involving almost 5000 men.

Who can suffer from PE?

PE is not linked to any particular age group. As many men in their 50s have PE as men in their teens and early 20s. It appears that PE crosses borders and cultures too, with men from different backgrounds and cultures experiencing similar rates of PE.

Premature ejaculation is a defined medical condition according to the International Society for Sexual Medicine (ISSM), so the best person to talk to is your doctor.
